Defects that are common to pearls include slight anomalies in the surfaces, and tags around the holes that have to be clipped off with nippers (although I don't see any of those problems in these pearls, so far). Pearls are synthetically coated, and I don't know how durable they are.

These beads look chiffon yellow in the picture, but they are a deeper yellow -- not a really deep yellow, but deeper than the picture shows. For reasons I don't understand, pearls always look washed-out in photographs -- at least, in my photographs.
