These beads are from my 1980's stash when I was making jewelry myself. They are extremely light; and when I bought them, I thought they were some kind of seed or pod or other natural substance. Well, it turns out that they are plastic. However, they mimic a natural substance very well, since the surface is matte and appears to have a subtle mottling of color (very subtle, just enough to make the beads look natural). As I say in Defects above, some of the beads have tags of excess plastic at one end. Those tags are easily clipped off with cuticle nippers. However, when you clip off a tag, it will leave a small shiny spot; but that shouldn't matter since the end will be pressed against the next bead. Some of the tags will already be removed when you receive the beads. (Cuticle nippers are a tool every beader should have; they are very useful. You should buy the scissor-type, not the spring-loaded type.) As with glass beads, if you handle these beads with greasy hands, the grease will fill in some of the matte finish and make it look shiny, so you'll want to handle them with clean hands. Since the beads are so light, if you pair them with very heavy beads, your necklace may not hang right. |
