Opaque burnt umber (brown) with several swirls of pink around the middle of the beads; there are also swirls of gold-colored sparkles that run around the beads. The swirls of pink can be large or small, and they apparently represent flowers, although they aren't very well formed. |

The beads appear to be in good shape. However, they appear to be hand-made, and they are not all perfectly round or uniform in size (they vary from about 9mm to 10mm, with most being around 9.5mm). The variations from one bead to the next are not very noticeable, so I don't see that as a defect. Also, I noticed that some beads have slightly larger holes than other beads. |

These beads are from my 1980's stash. They must be lampwork beads for a couple reasons: First, they are not a perfectly uniform size (molded beads would be uniform); second, I don't see any way that the little pink flowers could have been added to molded beads. On the other hand, lampwork beads usually have 2mm holes, and the holes in these beads are smaller. If these are indeed lampwork beads, they would be the kind made in a factory by a worker who makes a zillion of them, not by what you would call an artisan. (As you can see, I don't know everything there is to know about beads.) Regardless of how they are made, they are pretty, especially if you like burnt umber. However, the pink flowers (if that's what they are) are not very well formed. They look more like little swirls than flowers. As for the country of origin, there is a slip in the bag that says "Made in Japan". However, a lot of the beads that I have from the 1980's have that same slip in them, and I now wonder if the supplier didn't just put that slip in every bag of beads. If they weren't made in Japan, then they would have been made in the Czech Republic (or perhaps it was Czechoslovakia then), or possibly Italy. Regarding the price, I am pricing them a little lower than I would expect to price comparable beads if I purchased them new today. |
